Kindle Fire Reviews
Does the Kindle Fire live up to the hype?
Is it good enough to take some of the rival Nook Color’s market share?
The design of the Kindle Fire has produced a device that is smaller than many full-blown tablets. It is lightweight so it’s easy to hold while reading ebooks, and its simplicity of operation will appeal to most users. It is heavier and bulkier than a dedicated eBook reader, but still relatively light compared to other tablet computers.
One of the best selling points of the Amazon Kindle Fire is that it’s a tablet computer at a fraction of the price. At only $199, it’s cheaper than most tablets you can buy, yet its functions don’t put it into the budget category, and you get more than what you might expect for that price.
The online giant Amazon has a number of online streaming services in the form of an Amazon Prime membership – this costs just $79 per year. For that modest fee, users will have free access to thousands of movies and TV shows and digital music to stream directly to their device. Even more are available to buy or rent for an extra fee.
The Kindle Fire is essentially an entertainment-rich portal into Amazon’s varied services, with attractive and appealing storefronts for Kindle books, Android apps, movies, TV shows and music.
You might think that downloading all these movies, TV shows and MP3s would take a huge amount of storage space, and fill up your memory, but this simply is not an issue with the Amazon Kindle Fire. Amazon uses their cloud storage solution – free – to host your digital media collection so that you simply don’t need a huge hard drive size on the Fire.
Amazon have created a new browser – the Silk Browser – which offers a whole new browsing experience. This browser means you can surf the internetnet over a Wi-Fi connection, as well as viewing view Flash sites and videos.
One of the best innovations with the Silk Browser is the fact that it uses Amazon’s Cloud services to help pages load faster than they possibly could have otherwise. What this means is that certain popular elements are stored by Amazon in the Cloud so they can be sent to your Fire as quickly as possible.

All Amazon’s new Kindles use a service called Whispersync, which keeps your library in sync between various devices, and makes sure you always start reading where you left off, even if you switch from your Kindle to your laptop, phone or PC in the meantime. The best thing about Whispersync on the Amazon Kindle Fire is that it doesn’t just work with books – it now works with video streaming. Start streaming a video on the Kindle Fire, and pick up viewing where you left off on your PC or TV!
The Amazon Kindle Fire uses a dual core processor, as do most of the best current tablet computers, so you can quickly switch between programs or apps, and these run at a good speed. The Kindle Fire has no camera, and no microphone.
The Kindle Fire has 8GB memory, which is not a lot for a tablet computer. However this is less of an issue because the Kindle Fire Amazon Kindle Fire will store your files in the cloud to help prevent filling up your on-board memory. This is vital, because the Kindle Fire has no memory card expansion slot.
What differentiates the Amazon Kindle Fire from other eReaders is the fact that it’s based on Android and has access to a number of different apps through the Amazon AppStore, but not the many thousands available through the official Android store – Amazon stocks only a fraction of the total number of Android apps available today, about 10,000 out of the 200,000 available in the wide Android Market.
The Amazon Kindle Fire only has 8 hours battery life, like the Nook Color. Although not much compared to an ordinary eReader, this is pretty standard for tablet computers.
The main rival to the Kindle Fire would seem to be the Barnes & Noble Color Nook. Both devices look great, are lightweight, and have a range of downloadable apps. The Kindle Fire has the advantage both in its pricing and its comprehensive and well-established online store, making it an excellent solution for those who want a tablet computer on the cheap.
